Rabies in Los Angeles County, 2025

Rabid bats are found every year in Los Angeles County. Explore years of rabid bat data.

The map at right show locations where rabid bats were found in 2025. Note that areas on the maps without red stars can still have rabid bats. Red stars represent bats that have tested positive for rabies after they were found near people or pets, then reported to Animal Control and tested by Public Health.

Rabid Bats found in Los Angeles County in 2025 are listed below. Bat species name included when available.

  1. Santa Clarita.  March.  Canyon bat found dead in the backyard of a home.

  2. Santa Clarita.  April.  Canyon bat found alive in the front yard of a home.

  3. Santa Clarita.  April.  Canyon bat found dead on the ground outside of the garage at a home.

  4. Burbank.  May.  Mexican free-tailed bat found alive on the ground outside of an apartment building beside the trash cans.

  5. Llano.  May.  Hoary bat found alive on the ground in a public setting.

  6. Glendale.  May.  Mexican free-tailed bat found alive on the ground outside of a business.

  7. Glendale.  May.  Canyon bat found dead on the ground outside of an apartment complex.

  8. Palmdale.  May.  Mexican free-tailed bat found alive inside the gymnasium of a school.

  9. Santa Clarita.  May.  Canyon bat found alive on the ground in the yard outside of a home.  Two dogs may have been exposed.

  10. Castaic. June. Canyon bat found dead on the driveway of a home.

  11. Santa Clarita.  June.  Canyon bat found alive in the front yard of a home.

  12. Topanga.  June.  Canyon bat found alive in the backyard of a home.  A dog was exposed and had direct contact with the bat.

  13. Santa Clarita.  June.  Canyon bat found dead on the back patio of a home.  A dog was exposed and had direct contact with the bat.

  14. Burbank. July. Mexican free-tailed bat found dead in a storage room at a public facility.

  15. Glendale.  July.  Mexican free-tailed bat found alive on the ground outside of an apartment complex.  A dog may have been exposed while sniffing at the bat.

  16. Castaic.  July.  Canyon bat found alive in the backyard of a home. A dog that was not vaccinated against rabies was exposed.

  17. Encino.  July.  Canyon bat found alive on the outdoor patio of an apartment. 

  18. Glendora.  July.  Canyon bat found alive in the backyard of a home.

  19. Porter Ranch.  July.  Canyon bat found alive in the backyard of a home.  A dog may have been exposed.

  20. Claremont.  July.  Canyon bat found alive in the walkway outside of a home.

  21. Burbank.  July.  Canyon bat found alive inside of an outdoor mailbox.

  22. Northridge.  July.  Canyon bat found alive in the parking lot of an apartment complex.

  23. Santa Clarita (Valencia).  August.  Canyon bat found alive inside of the garage of a home.

  24. Palmdale.  August.  Canyon bat found alive in the yard of a home.  Two dogs that were not vaccinated against rabies were exposed.

  25. Azusa.  August.  Canyon bat found dead floating in a swimming pool at a home.

  26. Santa Clarita.  August.  Canyon bat found dead floating in a swimming pool at a home.

  27. Granada Hills.  August.  Canyon bat found alive hanging on the outside of a screen door at a condo complex. 

  28. Lake Hughes.  August.  Big brown bat  found alive on the ground outside of a home.  Two dogs were exposed, one of which was not vaccinated against rabies.

  29. Santa Clarita.  August.  Canyon bat found alive on the ground in the backyard of a home.  A dog that was not up to date with the rabies vaccine was exposed.

  30. Santa Clarita.  August.  Canyon bat found alive between a closed kitchen window and a screen at a home.

  31. Claremont. August.  Long-eared myotis  bat found alive hanging off the side of a swimming pool.

  32. Santa Clarita (Valencia).  September.  Bat found alive hanging on a window ledge outside of a home.

  33. Glendora.  September.  Canyon bat found alive in the backyard of a home under a grill. 

  34. La Crescenta (Glendale).  September.  Big brown bat found alive on an outdoor patio.  A dog was exposed.

  35. Castaic.  September.  Canyon bat found dead by a decorative wreath on the front door of a home.

  36. Santa Clarita.  September.  Bat found dead on the ground by the garage door of a house. 

  37. Palmdale.  September.  Canyon bat found alive inside of a house on the floor.

  38. Chatsworth.  September. Mexican Free-tailed bat found alive on a patio outside of a home.

  39. Santa Clarita.  September. Canyon bat found dead on the driveway outside of a home.

  40. Burbank.  September.  Canyon bat found dead in the front yard of a home.

  41. Glendale.  September.  Canyon bat found dead on the driveway outside of a home.

  42. Santa Clarita.  September.  Canyon bat found alive outdoors on the back porch of a home.

  43. Santa Clarita (Valencia).  September.  Canyon bat found alive after falling from a garage door at a house.

  44. West Hollywood.  September.  Canyon bat found alive clinging to a package that had been  brought inside an apartment.

  45. Woodland Hills.  September.  Canyon bat found alive in the front yard of a home. 

  46. Sherman Oaks.  September.  Mexican Free-tailed bat found alive inside of an apartment.  A cat that was not up to date with its rabies vaccine was exposed.

  47. Santa Clarita (Valencia). September. Bat found dead in the backyard of a home.

  48. Burbank.  September.  Canyon bat found alive on the sidewalk outside of a house. A dog may have been exposed while walking.

  49. Santa Clarita (Valencia).  September.  Canyon bat found alive in the backyard of a home.

  50. Santa Clarita.  September.  Canyon bat found alive on the walkway leading up to the front door of a home.

  51. Duarte.  September.  Mexican Free-tailed bat found dead at a large townhome complex.  A dog may have been exposed while walking.

  52. Monrovia.  September.  Canyon bat found alive on the outdoor windowsill of a house.

  53. Santa Clarita (Canyon Country).  October.  Canyon bat found dead on a porch outside of a home and then moved to the sidewalk.

  54. Santa Clarita.  October.  Canyon bat found outside on the ground at a home.

  55. Sherman Oaks.  October.  Canyon bat found clinging to the wall of an apartment complex then found on the driveway two days later. 

  56. Glendale.  October.  Canyon bat found alive outdoors on the doorstep of a home.

  57. Glendale.  October.  Canyon bat found alive in the backyard of a home.

  58. Encino.  October.  Canyon bat found alive outdoors on the porch of a home.

  64. Burbank. November. Mexican Free-tailed bat found alive on balcony of a home.

  65. Santa Clarita. November. Canyon bat found dead in a garage at a home.

  66. La Verne.  November.  Canyon bat found alive on the ground on a hiking trail.

  67. Woodland Hills.  November.  Canyon bat found dead in a swimming pool.

  68. Glendale.  December.  Mexican Free-tailed bat found dead on the sidewalk outside of multiple businesses.

  69. Calabasas.  December.  Canyon bat found alive in the front yard of a home.
